Introducing our... Auto-Balancing Manifold

Our new stainless steel manifold features a patented valve which enables automatic flow control, avoiding the risk of oversupplying any rooms and ensuring the system operates with optimum temperature distribution and uses less energy.

Features and Benefits:

• Automatic hydronic balancing - saving time at installation as the flow rate is set by turning the valve with the supplied key
• Control cartridge - ensuring a constant flow rate
• Easily adapted flow rate - able to be adapted to given heating loads, and calculated as part of the free design service
• Optimum temperature distribution
• No excessive surface temperatures
• Energy saving benefits
• Uniform heat output for increased comfort

How it works

As circuits open and close the valve adjusts itself to ensure the set flow rate is maintained in each individual circuit. Standard manifolds do not have this feature, meaning as a circuit opens and closes, the flow rates will move from the optimum set rate and oversupply some rooms.

Meet the... General Manager of Polypipe Underfloor Heating

Find more about Rachel Smith, our General Manager for Polypipe Underfloor Heating.

What is your current role and how long have you been doing it?

I’m currently General Manager for Polypipe Underfloor heating. I’ve been in the role just 6 months now.

What does your role entail?

I am responsible for leading the UFH division, managing the team to deliver the business vision for growth and development, working alongside my colleagues, to plan and implement our long-term division strategy.

How did you get started in this industry?

My first role in the industry was for a Ductile Iron pipe manufacturer in the customer service team, supporting both UK merchants and Export partners – this was a lifetime ago! I soon progressed into Product Management and then Marketing Communications roles for the same organisation. By combining these two elements I started as Marketing Manager for Polypipe Civils in 2004.

What roles were you doing before and how did they prepare you for this one?

My role immediately prior to this one was as Head of Marketing for Polypipe Building Products.

I’ve been lucky enough to get involved across a variety of strategic initiatives which has seen me be responsible for the creation and development of new sector initiatives – such as Polypipe Water Management Solutions.

My last role as Head of Marketing for Polypipe Building Products allowed me to engage with a number of key stakeholders to help understand the wants and needs of our customers, both direct (the Plumbing and Heating merchants) and our end users – Heating Engineers, Installers – and ultimately homeowners.

What would you like to achieve in your new role?

To de-mystify underfloor heating. People thing it’s some kind of ‘dark art’ and while it is true that a level of technical know-how is required, underfloor heating provides a warm and inviting environment for both homes and businesses.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Blimey! There are a couple of stand-out moments for me, returning to Polypipe after working elsewhere for two years – it felt like coming home. Winning the Marketing Team of the Year Award in 2015 at the Construction Marketing Awards – I pride myself on building high-performance teams and having just formed the team a few short months prior to winning, having our work recognised by the industry was an amazing feeling.

What do you see as the main issues for builders’ merchants and the industry at the moment?

I think sustainability is going to be a key issue. Initiatives like the London Plan and Green infrastructure will play a big part in the construction sector in the coming years. As consumers, we are becoming ever more demanding, we live in a society where everything is ‘instant’ – builders merchants need to think about the challengers of meeting the demand of this culture.

If you could go back to the start of your career, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

Don’t be frightened to take advice from others, nobody has all the answers. And do what you love – then you never work a day in your life.

What keeps you busy at the weekends?

Mainly my family. I have a nine-year-old daughter who has discovered her mum’s passion for shopping, coffee and cake! Last summer we bought a touring caravan and have spent many a happy weekend in the Norfolk countryside – although we’ve not risked putting up the awning yet, referred to by my more seasoned caravan friends as ‘divorce in a bag’!

What’s your favourite book? Favourite film?

I love a good read; favourite authors include Ian Rankin (anything Rebus) and Lee Child. Film wise, it’s not a favourite because it’s particularly good but I love ‘All of Me’ by Steve Martin – purely for the fact that it reminds me of when I lived in New York as a teenager.

If you could be a superhero, what super-power would you choose?

I’d like to be able to fly – I hate conventional flying but love seeing the world, so this would be perfect for me.

Polypipe donates bear necessities to wildlife park’s grizzly new arrivals

Polypipe Building Products have recently donated plastic toys and puzzle feeders to the trio of Ussuri brown bears, which arrived at Yorkshire Wildlife Park (YWP) in August.

Development Technologist Jonathan Simmen worked with the wildlife park to design a variety of bespoke toys, helping the bears to discover the joy of play and exercise their grey matter in their new UK home.

They are already a hit with brothers Kai and Riku, and 27-year-old female Hanako, following their 5400 mile journey from their native Japan to the animal sanctuary in Branton, Doncaster.

Cameron McLellan, managing director at Polypipe Building Products, said:

“Yorkshire Wildlife Park is doing such wonderful things for both the animals in their care and the local economy.  As a Doncaster business, we’re delighted to be able to support the park and look forward to donating more items in the future.”

Other donors to the bears’ rehoming project included South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, Stantec, Don Valley Brewery, South West Play, Danum Plants, GMS Fencing and Maintenance, and Create Building Contractors and Property Developers.

The project used donated materials to replicate the bears’ natural habitat and encourage them to explore and forage as they might in the wild within a four-acre reserve.

Simon Marsh, animal collections manager at the wildlife park, said:

“The bears deserve to enjoy their time at YWP and we are sure the fantastic new toys and constructions will provide them with a lot fun and happiness.  We are so thankful for the generosity and support of the local businesses and friends.”

The Ussuri brown bear is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species due to habitat loss and illegal hunting, with numbers dropping to around 10,000 in Japan. The bears, also known as the Black Grizzly, can weigh up to 550Kg and live up to 35 years.

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park Foundation has been supporting animal welfare projects in Asia, including bear welfare workshops in Japan and UK charity Wild Welfare, a global organisation committed to improving welfare standards in captive wild animal facilities, to transfer the trio to the UK.

The park and the foundation support conservation and welfare projects around the world from the critically endangered Amur leopard in Russia, black rhino in East Africa to lemurs of Madagascar.

[NEWSLETTER] Polypipe Winter 2018

Progressive Case Study: Everything you need for a residential extension

As part of our new Polypipe Building Products blog, we are introducing ‘Progressive Case Studies’.

We have numerous case studies related to housing on Polypipe.com, but often, more than one product group relates to a particular project and this is something we aim to illustrate with Progressive Case Studies.

Each step of the build we will share insight from our Product Managers on their particular product category along with information on the various products used, meaning that the end result is one full Case Study for that project.

We hope that this is something that will prove useful and insightful to blog visitors in relation to their own projects in future.

Everything you need for a residential extension

Situated in Doncaster, this unassuming three bed semi-detached house was built to match the rest of the estate. But, having lived there for seven years, the owners decided to take the plunge and make the most of their oddly shaped corner plot, to turn their cut and paste house in to something more unique.

This included enlarging their box room to give three good sized double bedrooms and creating a large multi-purpose open living space to the rear of the property. To make this a reality meant creating a double extension to the side of the property and a single height extension to the rear.

Plot Drainage

The first product category we shall cover for this case study is below ground drainage. The drains were re-sited to accommodate the new footprint meaning relocation of two inspection chambers and accompanying pipework.

Here is a short video from our Below Ground Product Manager, Richard Eddy, explaining the process.

Keep an eye out on our social channels for a post announcing when the next product category has been added to this case study.

Find us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Meet the... Digital Marketing Executive

Find out more about Alicia Tonge, a Digital Marketing Executive at Polypipe Building Products.

What is your position at Polypipe and how long have you been there?

I’ve been a Digital Marketing Executive at Polypipe Building products since April of 2018.

What does a typical day at Polypipe look like for you?

I manage the Polypipe Building Products social media presence on both our Trade and Home accounts, which means that my day tends to start with a cup of tea and going over the previous evening’s social media activity. I do keep an eye on things out of hours and I will always aim to get back to people as quickly as I can – but sometimes it’s just not possible and a response would have to wait for during business hours, so first job is to make sure I get people an answer as soon as possible.

The rest of my days are extremely varied. I could be creating digital content for social media, editing product photography, creating content for our website, I could be out of office doing site or product photography, or I could be covering an event or trade show – no day is the same!

What are three words you associate with Polypipe?

Established, community, Doncaster.

What is the best part of working for Polypipe?

The best part of working for Polypipe is the people and the support you get from them. I am part of a great team in the marketing department, but equally everybody outside our office from the Customer Experience Team, to the Product Managers, to the external sales team are always happy to help.

What is your proudest moment at Polypipe?

I think surviving 31 Days of Giveaways was quite a proud moment for me! It required constant monitoring throughout the month and encouraged some great engagement amongst our followers. It is always great to make somebodies day and our winners seemed to love the prizes. We discovered some great new industry accounts to follow throughout the month, it was really well received. I must admit though, that I was ready for the notifications to stop by the end of the month!

What keeps you busy at the weekends?

From a love of walking in the Peak District or North Yorkshire, I’ve become a bit of a photography hobbyist so on weekends I’m usually somewhere with my camera enjoying the outdoors.

Where is your favourite place to go on holiday?

My favourite place is Robin Hoods Bay in North Yorkshire as I have been nearly every year of my life and have a great family connection with the place. Outside of the UK, my favourite holiday was Chicago.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us?

My degree is actually in Zoology. I’m a massive animal lover, with a keen interest in animal behaviour and have spent time working at both Flamingo Land Zoo and Chester Zoo.

[DATA SHEET] IC600mm Diameter Chambers

Featuring... Polysewer

Polysewer is a range of PVCu structured wall pipes and fittings with diameters ranging from 110mm to 300mm.

They provide robust, chemical and sewer-gas resistant pipes for new and replacement gravity sewerage systems. Our fully comprehensive range of fittings includes bends, double and triple sockets, couplers, reducers and adapters.

All our Polysewer products are manufactured in accordance with BSI Kitemark Licence number KM582885 to BS EN 13476 for projects requiring Building Regulations or Section 104 adoption agreements to Sewers for Adoption 7th edition. Polysewer products are also covered by Water Industry standard WIS 4-35-01.

The Benefits of Polysewer:

  • Structured wall pipe system benefitting from high ring stiffness and strength
  • Fully compliant to Sewers for Adoption 7th Edition
  • Designed to a stiffness class of SN8 (a requirement for adoptable solutions)
  • Ideal for use in both new and replacement gravity sewer systems
  • Longer length pipes featuring integral sockets for quick and easy installation
  • Light in weight for ease of handling, cutting and manoeuvring on-site
  • Flexible pipe solutions which withstands ground movement and differential settlement
  • Durable, long life PVCu material
  • Chemical, impact and abrasion resistant
  • Resistant to sulphate attack and corrosion from sewer gases
  • Complete range of fittings including bends, junctions, reducers, couplers and adaptors
  • Readily available via our nationwide stockist network
  • Quick and simple bond return from the water companies by utilising an SFA7 compliant solution.

Pipes and Fittings

Because they are lighter, safer and easier to install, plastic pipes and fittings are becoming the material choice over legacy materials, such as clay or concrete. The use of plastics cuts overall project costs and minimises maintenance for the lifespan of the product. Unlike many legacy materials, plastic pipes don’t corrode and offer excellent resistance to a range of chemicals. When installed correctly, they require little or no maintenance in normal use as they don’t rust, pit or scale.

From 110mm Polysewer pipes to 3000mm Ridgistorm-XL surface water drainage solutions, we have the largest range of adoptable drainage systems on the market. You can see the full range of adoptable options here.
