Jordan Clayton of Polypipe Ltd (Mason Pinder) has recently been announced as the winner of the Worshipful Company of Horners and BPF 2019 Polymer Apprentice of the Year Award.

Jordan is currently undertaking a Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship at BTEC Level 3 whilst working at Mason Pinder. Jordan was said to have demonstrated a high level of achievement in the workplace as well as outstanding achievements in his apprenticeship.

His involvement in an improvement project lead to a company saving of approximately £260,000. Furthermore, his work-life balance has improved over the years and he is currently training physically on a regular basis.

Mason Pinder foreman and Jordan’s Manager Simon Golightly added,

The cost saving for me is not the focus, yes, it is a fantastic achievement however what it has done for Jordan’s development and communication skills is actually invaluable. This was an area identified during performance reviews that I asked Jordan to work on and I can proudly say that it has been well and truly succeeded.

Jordan will soon be invited to attend the Livery Companies Skills Council Award Ceremony in March 2020 to receive his Polymer Apprentice Certificate, ceremonial drinking horn and £500 cash prize.

The BPF continues to work closely with the WCoH to promote the plastics industry to the next generation and more information on these efforts can be found at www.polymerzone.co.uk.

Polypipe Underfloor Heating provides the Standard for single room kits

$
0
0

As we are still firmly nested within heating season, our focus across the Polypipe Trade social media accounts once again turns to Underfloor Heating throughout the month of January.

Firstly we are highlighting our Standard Output Room Packs or 'Single Room Kits'.

These provide heating engineers with everything needed to complete an installation in a single medium-sized room or building extension between 10m2 and 34m2.

Designed to work systematically with the homeowners current central heating system, the packs include:

If you require independent control of the underfloor heating system, you can purchase the following optional extras:

  • One programmable room thermostat (UFHPROGB, UFHPROGW)
  • One zone valve (UFH2PORTZV)

Secondly we are talking about the Polypipe Zonal Regulation Unit (ZRU).

The ZRU allows single rooms and extensions to be connect to an existing heating system, without the time consuming and expensive hydraulic and electrical alterations.

When connected to an existing radiator heating system, the ZRU converts the water flow and temperature to that suitable for underfloor heating.

  • Water is thermostatically blended to provide the ideal safe flow temperature control.
  • A sensor within the unit ensures operation will only occur when the flow temperature reaches 45°.
  • The room thermostat (if fitted) regulates air temperature in the space being heated by stopping the pump as built into the ZRU.
  • The ZRU can be positioned elsewhere within the property within close proximity to the room to be heated and the existing heating pipe work.
  • The ZRU can be used in both domestic and commercial buildings.
  •  As the ZRU thermostatically controls water temperature, the unit can also be used where low surface temperature heating by radiators is required.

Polypipe Building Products have recently completed a gigantic 16-month project to overhaul the design of the yard at our Broomhouse Lane, Head Office site in Doncaster.

Managed by Divisional Distribution Manager Mark Walker, the project took up thousands of man hours, involved over 10 different contractors and overall took a lot of blood sweat and tears, but we could not be happier with the result.

The new yard incorporates a one-way system and brand-new outside racking, providing a more efficient system and a safer working environment for all our employees.

Here are some comparisons of the changes that have been made.

Old racking storage system

New racking being installed

New racking area complete

Previous loading areas (6 bays stacked) Vs. New loading areas (9 bays evenly spaced)

Old congested single roadway for both FLT and HGV use

New separate roadways for FLT and HGV to reduce congestion

New one-way road access to the loading bays

BPPI2020 - BULK ORDERS

BPPI2020 - BULK ORDERS

Visiting Tedworth House

$
0
0

In 2017, Polypipe Building Products embarked on a key partnership with the charityHelp for Heroes, committing to several key initiatives that had the aim to help raise money, and to provide a new career path for many returning servicemen and women.

Help for Heroes provides lifelong support to service personnel and veterans with injuries and illnesses sustained while serving in the British Armed Forces. No matter when someone served, the Charity gives them the support they need to lead active, independent and fulfilling lives. Long-term recovery is more than repairing damaged bodies and minds; it’s about rebuilding lives.

With this in mind, and as we are due to renew our partnership with Help for Heroes this year, we jumped at the opportunity to visit the infamous Tedworth House Recovery Centre, to see what really happens with the monies raised by anybody donating to the charity.

An entrance to Tedworth House

Whether returning from duty or transitioning to civilian life, residents and day visitors at Tedworth House can take part in activities and life skills courses to help them get back out doing what they enjoy most.

We were greeted at Tedworth, not only by some of the brilliant team at Help for Heroes, but also by ex-serviceman Spencer Bull.

Support from Help for Heroes has helped Spencer to deal with major life changes, so to have him with us throughout the day really gave us a different perspective to the tour and how useful all the support that the charity provides really is.

A quick history of Help for Heroes and Tedworth

Bryn and Emma Parry, founders of Help for Heroes

In 2007, Bryn and Emma Parry founded Help for Heroes (H4H) to ‘just do something to help’ those wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. But it soon became apparent that ‘the wounded, injured and sick, who serve together, needed to recover together.’

By 2009, the Army Recovery Capability was developing and H4H funded the ‘pathfinder’ Personnel Recovery Centre (PRC) in Edinburgh. The Army identified Catterick, Colchester and Tidworth garrisons as sites for further PRC’s and H4H agreed to fund and build them.

There were cheaper alternatives to Tedworth, however it was thought to offer so much more than a new build could. ‘The blokes’ could have the best house in the area and would appreciate how much their country valued their sacrifice. The charity took over the house in February 2011 at a rent cost of £1 a year to the MOD. They don’t pay for statues or fixtures, and they add on to the property based on need with supportive individuals or companies sponsoring rooms or donating furniture and equipment.

A wide range of support

Tedworth has been specially designed to offer the very best recovery atmosphere. It offers en-suite bedrooms, a creative kitchen, a presentation room, two lounges, an adaptive gym with specialist equipment and even a Hero Garden for a further space to relax and take stock.

This specialist sports facility hosts many activities such as yoga, wheelchair sports, a ski ramp and a gym

The facility also houses a revolutionary Help for Heroes Support Hub which will gives Servicemen, women and Veterans access to specialist Service charities and agencies in a single location, ensuring that they are easily able to access the support they need.

The greenhouse in the gardens allows for cultivating various plants and various other activities, such as wreathmaking at Christmas

The relaxed atmosphere promotes general wellbeing, and residents are encouraged to undertake their own recovery programme under the guidance of specialist staff. It may involve educational courses, work placements, medical appointments or sporting activities. These activities are designed to improve personal independence, raise morale, and develop camaraderie with others who have been injured or become sick.

The furniture in this room was donated by British Airways. It is said to be a peaceful sanctury for many Veterans from the Navy as the air control system is not dissimilar to the engine noises they are used to on Navy ships

One such activity that took a collective of people around 18 months to complete was a project that saw the erection of a classic Saxon Roundhouse in the gardens at Tedworth, created in classic woodworking and thatching fashion. Overseen by a gentleman on permanent secondment from Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, residents are able to try their hand at traditional wood working methods and get hands on outdoors in the fresh air in a beautiful woodland environment.

The Saxon Roundhouse which has been built by veterans at Tedworth House

In reflection

Following our visit to Tedworth House we have certainly come away with a re-invigorated enthusiasm for this fantastic charity and the amazing work that they do.

When you think of a veteran who has been medically discharged, you don't necessarily think about the fact that almost in an instant their house, job, their family’s lives, their children’s school, their social circles, just suddenly comes to a halt. Their children can't suddenly see their friends & have to move schools, they have to start thinking about income & mortgages - things that may seem simple to some - but to military families and individuals, it could just be a whole new world of stress, pressure, panic, on top of dealing with the reason you were medically discharged in the first place.

A drawing created by a Help for Heroes beneficiary which sits in a hallway full of other varies pieces of art created by Veterans

The Future

We look forward to continuing our charity partnership with Help for Heroes in 2020 and in the years that follow.

If you want to find out more about the charity you can do so here.

If you would like to keep up to date with our social activity surrounding Help for Heroes you can find us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram.

Why the BSI Kitemark matters

$
0
0

All plumbers and installers know that there is one thing that can make or break your business – reputation. A good reputation for a business is hard won, but often easily lost, and the trust necessary to create that reputation can be built by offering products that achieve a BSI Kitemark.

When it comes to waste traps, we are the only manufacturer to achieve the BSI Kitemark for a traps range. With an extensive range stocked in thousands of outlets across the UK, we guarantee to comply with, or exceed the latest performance legislation.

Our BSI credentials are well established, with our first Kitemark achieved back in 1983. Our plastic piping offer, including three soil systems, six waste systems, four hot and cold water systems and nine rainwater profiles, all hold Kitemarks.

Grahame Wackett, Certification Manager at BSI, explains that in order to achieve a Kitemark for plastic traps a product is tested in five distinct areas:

1 Raw materials – does the material behave appropriately for the task?
2 Geometric characteristics – are all the dimensions accurate?
3 Mechanical – for example, will the product withstand an impact?
4 Physical – will the product withstand the necessary temperatures?
5 Performance – does it perform the job that it claims to do?

These tests ensure that every product is of a consistently high quality and fit for purpose. It means that customers can install the traps and forget about them, moving on to the next job with confidence. The Kitemark also means that there is longevity in the product, attesting that the product meets all the performance and durability claims on the packaging.

The Kitemark in effect becomes a symbol of trust because the plumber and the end-user know that whatever is being fitted in their home or their place of business is suitable. While some companies may state that their product meets the relevant standard, for a product to actually be Kitemark certified is a much more rigorous process.

Test and control

First comes the initial testing – comprehensive laboratory testing to prove the product meets the standards in the five areas listed above. There is then ongoing testing every year during the lifetime of the certification. BSI also assesses the factory production control processes. This is done twice a year and ensures that they are effective and that every product that comes off the line is fit for purpose and of consistently high quality.

Polypipe currently holds 23 Kitemarks and we are adding more all the time. Crucially, this process demonstrates it is not just a case of getting a product to pass a specific test – there is ongoing testing that we have to do all the time to ensure that the product meets the standard.

Our traps, for example, go through a thermal cycling test that far outweighs anything it is likely to go through in a domestic setting. Water is heated to 95 degrees and flows through the trap for 15 minutes – then cold water at 20 degrees for 10 minutes, and this is then cycled five times.

The tests also involve detailed checks of the entire product. Testers make sure that the threaded elements have the right length and diameter, that the connecting sockets have the correct depth and that the water seal height and wall thickness meet the requirements of the standard.

Polypipe could produce products without a BSI Kitemark. We could make lower cost, smaller traps – but this would mean the end-user having a product that would not drain sufficiently for it to work efficiently in a normal environment. And that’s not what we’re all about. We produce products which give installers the confidence of a job well done, with no repeat visits for future leaks.

From the professional installer’s point of view, products should come with the ability to ‘fit and forget’, meaning no fear of future calls from an unhappy customer with a leak. This is part and parcel of growing a business through customer recommendations, which will not happen if plumbers are required to make repeat visits for the same job, due to initial fitting of a sub-standard product.

With the average cost of an ‘escape of water claim’ coming to around £2,600 – it is expensive for customers to repair the damage to their homes in the event of a product failure. The damage to a plumber’s reputation, however, could be worth considerably more than that.

Added value

Fit-Rite technology has been developed by Polypipe to enable simple fitting and removability across Polypipe’s range of waste traps. The technology is said to allow for easy guidance in tight spaces, such as beneath baths and sinks, while a ring lock seal allows for quick and easy installation.

We have also partnered with antimicrobial technology specialist, BioCote, with a range of products manufactured to include an anti-odour and mould reduction chemical agent to kill 99.9% of harmful bacteria, eliminating blockages caused by the build-up of biofilm.

You can find out more about Kitemarks on the BSI website. Just visit https://www.bsigroup.com/en-GB/kitemark/product-testing/.

Why polybutylene should be the material of choice

$
0
0

Polybutylene pipe is ideal for most domestic hot and cold-water plumbing and heating systems, offering exceptional durability and long-term performance.

One of the key advantages of the material is that is has natural flexibility, so you can bend the pipe to fit even the most awkward positions. Whether it involves extending the number of rooms in a property, or the installation of a new bathroom. It’s the ideal product for the job.

Hot and Cold

Polybutylene delivers good resistance to freezing temperatures, which helps it to maintain durability in heating and water applications. The plumbing and heating pipe coils are lighter than comparable systems as well as being easier and quicker to install.

Polybutylene pipe also has the added benefit of ensuring more materials can be transported in either straight lengths or coils and, importantly, our pipe can be installed straight from the coil.

Once installed these materials offer superior performance in terms of low noise transmission and low water hammer effect, providing homes with a quiet efficient system.

Underfloor benefits

A screenshot of a Tweet from Heating Engineer Dennis Hollingworth of Hollingworth Heating and Plumbing. The tweet includes a video where he is installing Polypipe Overlay.

When it comes to installing pipes for underfloor heating systems, we provide polybutylene barrier pipe, available in 15mm coils of 25, 50, 80, 100, 120 or 150m lengths.

Whilst it is suitable for all underfloor heating applications that use 15mm pipe, including solid, suspended and over-the-floor applications, the extra advantage of using this type of piping is that any surplus pipe can also be used in radiator systems and hot and cold potable water installations.

Polybutylene can also be adapted for use in very specific applications. For example, some grades of polybutylene pipe are designed just for underfloor heating applications, with greater flexibility that can be used with the lowest profile retrofit systems.

Mix and Match

A screenshot of a tweet from PGM Plumbing in which he is using Polypipe's Grey PolyPlumb push-fit fitting with copper pipe.

Plastic plumbing pipe and fittings are compatible with traditional materials like copper and so can be mixed and matched for use in retrofit or refurb projects.

The use of push-fit fittings improves ease and speed of installation and can be used to complement copper in mixed material systems.

The key is to create the right solution for the job at hand, which means getting the very best out of plastic piping.

Going straight

A Heating Engineer installs Polypipe polybutylene pipe straight from the coil into a a project using Polypipe's Overlay underfloorheating system in a windmill.

At Polypipe our entire range of plumbing and heating pipe coils come with Pro-Straight technology built in, giving you unparalleled ease of use during installation.

The polybutylene five-layer barrier pipe remains highly flexible and can be used straight from the coil. It is suitable for use in most plumbing and heating installations and is British Standard Class S rated to BS7291 Part 1 and also Kitemark Licence Number 38148 to BS7291 Part 1 &2.

Polypipe Building Products is proud to have a dedicated merchandising team that are constantly on the road helping to merchandise branches for our customers.

The team is made up of Merchandising Manager Roger Goodwin and Brand Merchandisers Charlie Foster-Miles and Paula Partridge.

At the 2020 Polypipe Building Products Annual Sales Conference this year we managed to grab the team for a quick photo and a chat.

How long have you been working at Polypipe?

RG:  7 years on 1st March.

CFM: I have been working at Polypipe for a year and a half now.

PP: 5 months.

What does a typical day or week look like for you?

RG: Not sure there is a typical week but I always follow the same process; Plan, Do, Review.

Covering the whole UK can be a challenge so you have to love sunrises and coffee and as a merchandiser have a creative streak.

CFM: No week is ever the same. The beauty about this job is every merchant is different and they all have different ideas and visions. It’s our job as visual merchandisers to make that vision happen.

A typical week normally consists of Branch visits, placing orders for POS, general merchandising and responding to emails.

PP: I can be in many different areas in the country in 1 week ranging from Cornwall to Norwich. Helping people gain space to put product out or making an existing area look more inviting and shoppable by installing POS and correct layouts.

What are 3 words you associate with Polypipe?

RG: Teamwork, Professionalism, Ownership.

CFM: Happiness, Satisfaction, Grateful.

PP: Friendly, Supportive, Experienced.

What is something you like about working for Polypipe?

RG: Responsibility and variety, I embrace them both and appreciate them both in equal measure.

CFM: For me Polypipe is like one big family. Everyone is friendly and there’s always someone to help if you need a hand.

PP: I enjoy working for a company that looks after their employees. As well as being able to meet and help different people on a daily basis.

What keeps you busy at the weekends?

RG: I try not to be busy at weekends, but family and friends make them special.

CFM: Weekends for me is family time. Me and my wife like to go on long walks with our dog.

PP: My 3-year-old son.

Where is your favourite Holiday destination?

RG: Ideally Majorca but anywhere sunny.

CFM: My Favourite Holiday Destination would have to be Jamaica.  I am a huge fan of reggae music and Caribbean food. It was also our most recent holiday, we went there in October for our honeymoon and it was an amazing experience.

PP: Cornwall.

Tell us something about yourself that may surprise us?

RG: I love to design gardens and make Cigar Box Guitars. I also renewed my wedding vows in Las Vegas with an Elvis wedding!

CFM: Before I started at Polypipe, I was a soldier in the British Army. I was in the 2nd Battalion the Mercian Regiment. Which is a Light role infantry regiment.

While I was in the Army, I became a fully qualified British Army skydiving instructor. I would take soldiers returning from places like Afghanistan for their first ever Skydives. This was a part of something we called decompression. Which prepares them to return to normal life from war.

Charlie on a sky-dive.

PP: I only own 5 pairs of shoes. A pair of boots, trainers, going out boots, work boots and a pair of sandals.

Introducing... Overlay Plus

$
0
0

Laying underfloor heating will become faster and easier thanks to our latest Underfloor Heating system Overlay Plus.

Overlay Plus system is EIGHT times lighter than the standard gypsum board currently used (1.2kg compared to 10kg per board) and installation is also made easier as there is no need for any power tools – a Stanley knife is enough to cut the flooring to shape. There is less dust and mess produced during installation, and tiles can be fitted directly on top of the Overlay Plus boards.

We are constantly striving to improve products and systems and this latest innovation will mean savings of time and space for installers and more efficiency in energy-consumption for customers.

The new Overlay Plus boards are also larger in area and, thanks to the insulation core and aluminium lining, have been shown to increase the performance by 10 per cent.

Overlay Plus can be used on new-builds, refurbishments or extensions and will give a robust and reliable finish.

Giles Coombes, Polypipe Underfloor Heating Product Manager, said:

“The underfloor heating market is growing exponentially as householders realise how efficient the systems can be. We believe that it will increase even more in the next year and want to make sure installers can take advantage of the increase in demand.

Polypipe is continually striving to overcome the issues faced by installers and, with this market-leading innovation, we believe we have done it again.

This this new technology means that underfloor heating can be fitted more easily, less expensively and much faster. This will be a boon for installers and reduce installation time to keep customers happy.”

This new innovation comes as Polypipe Building Products celebrates our 40 years of being at the forefront of the plumbing and heating market. We promise to keep innovating and producing the highest quality products for the next 40 years and beyond aswell.

Orchard Croft development uses Elegance Colour, Sheffield

Polypipe supplies a final touch of Elegance for Sheffield development

$

Polypipe Building Products, the leading manufacturer of above and below-ground drainage systems for the residential housebuilding sector, supplied the Elegance Colour range of guttering and downpipe systems to the 14-home Orchard Croft development in High Green.

The homes designed at Orchard Croft use high pitched roofs, meaning that water from rainfall can enter a guttering system at a much higher flow rate. The Elegance Colour range of robust guttering and downpipe fittings and fixtures offered the developer a high performance system that provides sufficient capacity for the efficient disposal of heavy rainfall, flowing from a high pitched roof.

In addition, all Elegance Colour systems, available in square and sovereign profiles feature PVCu fascia brackets, top and side rafter brackets, and rise and fall brackets in galvanized metal to provide excellent support to the guttering system year upon year, which meet BS EN 12056-3: 2000 Roof Drainage recommendations.
Erris Homes chose a cast iron black from the Heritage range of colours available through Elegance to match the key features of the homes including doors and window frames.

Polypipe, which has worked with Erris Homes at a previous site in Leeds, also supplied technical support service from the sales and technical teams throughout the project.

Polypipe’s offers a range of high-capacity rainwater systems designed for areas that are vulnerable to high levels of rainfall.

Scott Leather, Commercial and Technical Director at Erris Homes said:

“This is our first development in Sheffield and as such, quality is paramount when you’re hoping to successfully establish a brand in a new area.

We are launching another new development in Sheffield and word of mouth among home buyers is so important in an industry like ours.

It was our hope that the quality of our homes, which is supported by Polypipe’s products, including their striking rainwater systems would be a key feature in supporting sales. This has proved successful as we only have one remaining property left to sell on the development.”

It is now two weeks since the Prime Minister introduced the regime of tighter restrictions in order to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus.  The Prime Minister, the Secretary of State for BEIS, the Minister for the Cabinet Office, and the Secretary of State for Environment, Communities & Local Government have all stated the importance of maintaining capability in the construction sector, although inevitably there has been a reduction in activity during this time.

Polypipe Group Plc is playing a role in a variety of ways during this crisis.  We have supplied ventilation equipment to two emergency hospitals, with a further four projects being supplied in the coming weeks.  We are manufacturing visors to supplement the PPE supplies of the NHS, and we have donated a lot of our own stock of PPE to front line carers.  Elsewhere, our products continue to be installed in the emergency hospitals that are being built around the UK, as well as some of the essential maintenance work that is going on within existing facilities.  More broadly it is essential that our product ranges remain available for repairs and maintenance for other key sectors, such as food supply, utilities and infrastructure.

Polypipe’s businesses have remained open to serve customers, albeit with a significantly reduced number of colleagues in work.  The health, safety and well-being of our colleagues and customers is of course paramount.  Colleagues are working from home where appropriate, and various measures have been put in place to achieve safe working practices across our sites, and in the ways we are delivering to our customers.  Our customer service and support teams remain available to handle any enquiries.

At Polypipe, we choose Polybutylene to manufacture our pipes to create the most flexible and efficient pipe and jointing systems available. This is ideal for both domestic hot and cold-water plumbing and heating systems, providing exceptional durability and long-term performance.

Our pipes come with Pro-Straight technology, giving you unparalleled ease of use during installation. To put it simply, Pro-Straight means that our pipes can be laid straight, straight from the coil. • 5 layer Barrier Pipe
  • Remains highly flexible from the coil

If you have followed us at all over the past few years you will have by now heard about our Registered Heating Engineer Network (RHEN).

The RHEN is made up of industry certified, Gas Safe registered Heating Engineers who have completed a BPEC qualification in warm water underfloor heating – and who have undergone practical training on all Polypipe Underfloor Heating systems at one of our training centres.

We value our RHEN members and the quality of work that they do. That is why we have decided to extend our full system warranty from 2 years to 5 years exclusive to RHEN members only. This covers any Polypipe Underfloor Heating installations that include all Polypipe manufactured or supplied products (e.g. pipe, manifolds, system filters and controls). Full T&C's apply.
